Women* studied natural sciences at the University of Vienna ever since they were allowed to do so in 1897.

In this talk we will start off with a historical glimpse of that time. Who were those women in this first generation of female natural scientists? What were their social backgrounds and what kind of barriers and problems did they face in fin de siecle Vienna? A time and place where antisemitism was on on the rise and career chances for young (jewish) female scientists were being destroyed by antisemitic and misogynist professors in power.

After that historical excursion we travel back to the future and take a look at the current working and living conditions for female* scientists in todays’ Europe.

We will learn what challenges the new generation of women* in science faces and why feminism is important in order tackle and fight still existing social injustice in science.
