We cordially invite you to join the presentation and reading from the book „IN OUR OWN WORDS“

– A book that documents the lives of Refugee Women in Germany – told in their own words. The book was published in november 2015 by the International Women Space (IWS) and will be presented by activists of this group. (More detailed description below)

The event will take place on the 29th of April 2016 in Bibliothek von unten (W23), Wipplingerstr. 23 (1010 Vienna) at 7 PM

The book presentation will be held in English. There will be translation into somali and german. If you need further translation please contact us.

About the book:

“In 2013 we, the activists from International Women Space (IWS), set ourselves the task of documenting the lives and stories of refugee women in Germany. We approached the project in the Latin American tradition of testimonial literature – looking to amplify the voice of the voiceless (…) Two years on, after many stories being exchanged and many women working collectively on this project, IWS is pleased to announce the launch of IN OUR OWN WORDS. The book contains texts by and about women and includes 10 testimonials of refugee women in Germany: women who could have migrated, but wouldn’t have been given a visa. Women who became refugees in their own regions before attempting to reach Europe by the deadly routes available. Women fleeing war, poverty and environmental disasters caused by corporation’s greed, women fleeing persecution for not conforming to the gender they were assigned at birth. Women running away from their own families for not accepting domestic violence perpetrated by patriarchy. Über das Buch:

“IN UNSEREN EIGENEN WORTEN Geflüchtete Frauen in Deutschland erzählen von ihren Erfahrungen Wir – die Aktivistinnen vom International Women Space (IWS) – hatten es uns 2013 als Aufgabe gesetzt, die Lebensgeschichten von geflüchteten Frauen in Deutschland zu dokumentieren. Wir näherten uns dem Projekt mit Hilfe der lateinamerikanischen Tradition der Testimonal-Literatur an – dabei immer mit dem Blick darauf, die Stimme der Stimmlosen zu verstärken. (…) Zwei Jahre nachdem sich viele über ihre Geschichten miteinander ausgetauscht haben und viele Frauen kollektiv an diesem Projekt gearbeitet haben, freut sich der IWS die Veröffentlichung von IN UNSEREN EIGENEN WORTEN bekannt geben zu können. Das Buch enthält Text von und über Frauen und beinhaltet zehn Testimonials von geflüchteten Frauen in Deutschland: Frauen, die migrieren hätten können, aber denen keine Visa ausgestellt wurden. Frauen, die in ihren eigenen Regionen zu Geflüchteten wurden, bevor sie versuchten über die tödlichen Routen nach Europa zu kommen. Frauen, die vor Krieg, Armut und Umweltkatastrophen fliehen, welche durch die Gier von Unternehmen erzeugt werden; Frauen, die der Verfolgung entfliehen müssen, da sie nicht dem Geschlecht entsprechen, welches ihnen bei ihrer Geburt zugeteilt wurde. Frauen, die vor ihren eigenen Familien weglaufen müssen, da sie nicht die durch das Patriarchat verursachte häusliche Gewalt akzeptieren.
