Oleksiy Radynskis Where Russia Ends (2024) examines the often-overlooked history of colonialism and environmental destruction in the Russian-occupied territories of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. The essay film weaves together film footage produced during expeditions of Ukrainian filmmakers in the 1980s in Siberia and the Far North. The film sheds light on the ideology of exploitation and development of natural resources and reconstructs the erased history of the numerous imperialist wars that Russia waged against its later colonies against the grain of the footage’s colonial gaze. Philipp Goll will contextualize the film in the frameworks of the exhibition Leak. The End of the Pipeline (Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, 2024) he developed together with Oleksiy Radynski and Hito Steyerl. The talk will examine forms of complicity especially of (West-)Germany in a joint venture of energy colonialism which financed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine through import of gas from Siberia.
