Defend Prosfygika Infoevent
Prosfygika in Athens is the largest residential squat in Europe with almost a hundred years of history and is currently under an immediate threat of eviction by the Greek state. Prosfygika was built as a Bauhaus-style community neighbourhood for the Rum refugees from Anatolia in the 1930s and has been a site of anti-fascist resistance throughout its history. Since the 2000s, a growing international community, self-organised through the neighbourhood’s general assembly, committees, and working groups has been building an autonomous collective life based on solidarity and mutual aid. Today, Prosfygika is a model of bottom-up re-appropriation of heritage, and a lived alternative to the capitalist system and the patriarchal nation state.
The community of Prosfygika has often successfully defended itself against the attacks of the neoliberal state. But now everything is at stake: Contracts for a real estate project of gentrification have been signed, and the Athens regional government is doing everything in its power to implement them. This puts at risk of eviction more than 400 residents of Prosfygika, including about 50 children. Aristotelis Chantzis, a long-time member of the community, has been on hunger strike for more than 6 weeks. For the people of Prosfygika, their very existence is at stake, and they are fighting accordingly, under the motto “Either we win or we win!”
At the solidarity event, we will share information about Prosfygika as a political project and updates on the current struggle. Materials produced by the residents and friends of Prosfygika will be on sale to collect funds for the autonomous renovations of the neighbourhood.
