Set in 18th-century France, the film follows painter Marianne, who is commissioned to create the wedding portrait of Héloïse without Héloïse knowing she is being painted. As Marianne observes her in secret, the distance between artist and subject begins to disappear, and something much more intimate takes its place.
Directed and written by Céline Sciamma and starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, Portrait of a Lady on Fire won both Best Screenplay and the Queer Palm at Cannes.
It’s a film about looking and being seen, queer desire, women’s autonomy, art, and what remains after a love story ends. Sciamma herself has described the film as a manifesto about the female gaze.
